Frequently Asked Questions
Language
As you can see most of the language used on this website is in English. We have used English as our main language thanks to our founders, whose English backgrounds dictated the early years. Nowadays we still have some foreign members and quite a few foreign players participate in the Dutch Lacrosse League. We there still choose to communicate in English to allow easy access to anyone from anywhere.
Try out the sport and the Devils
If you have never played lacrosse or you would like to see what it’s like to be a devil, feel free to email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . We will be able to answer any questions you might have with respect to our trainings, the level and other lacrosse related issues. If you want to try a training, that's possible as well. We offer anyone the possibility to try 2 weeks of practice for free. See if you like the sport. If you like it, you may want to join the Devils. We offer partial year fees, so that people are able to join at any time. If you still doubt after two weeks, feel free to approach the board members with any questions or doubts you might have.
Teams
We have currently one women’s team and one men’s team. It's possible for anyone to join and play in one of our teams.
Introduction period
We offer an introduction period each year after the start of the academic year. This we call the Lacrosse Introduction package. It's not mandatory, but a lot of fun as it includes a grand dinner with all the new and old members, a shirt, and 3 weeks of training. If you want to join the teams later in the season, you will have to do this without the introduction. As the Devils often hang out after training or somewhere in town, you will get to know everybody quickly enough.
Open trainings and workshops
Every now and then we offer free workshops or open trainings. Feel free to join our practices by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to announce your arrival. Are there any requirements to join the team?
It's a demanding sport as the matches are very intense, so most of our training sessions will have the same intensity. But if you feel that your condition or stamina may not be up to the task, fear not! All of us started somewhere and you will have plenty of opportunity to get back in shape. Also you don't have to have any experience in the sport. All of the basics will be taught by us and we will make sure that you will be able to train at your own experience level. Since this sport is so small in the Netherlands, most players have not played the sport for a period longer than 3 or 4 years. Every season we start with a lot of new faces, so don't be afraid of the skill level. We will get you up to speed in no time!
How demanding are we on your part
We'll expect you to train on Monday and Wednesday nights and we expect you to come to games. It’s a pity if you can't make it to training or a game, but give a good reason and we will understand and accept it.
What are the Devils like?
After trainings we go for a quick drink in the bar (at the training field). We also have a great social committee that arranges a few cool events throughout the season. If teammates have a party it's not uncommon that the team gets invited too. Plus there are a few events and tournaments throughout the season in Holland and outside the country which we attend. Beach lacrosse and the Lowlands tournament are one of those. Overall we have a dedicated and social team.
The sport
We at the Domstad Devils play field lacrosse. You can say it’s the original version of lacrosse. You can find the rules and history of the game at Wikipedia.
Is it a dangerous sport?
No, the rules of the game are designed to keep the game safe. Referees will always have an eye for safety; safety for anyone will overrule any rule. For men it is a full contact sport. Meaning body checks are allowed, but there are very strict rules for body checks to keep the sport safe. Men wear a lot of equipment to protect themselves against injuries.
For women it is not a full contact sport. Stick-on-stick contact is allowed, but no body contact. Hence women wear a lot less equipment.
Costs
The membership fee for a full year is 150 euro’s. That's less than most soccer clubs and certainly less than hockey clubs.
For those joining in the middle of season we have different calculations. Please contact us if you want more information about this option.
Equipment
Next to the membership fee costs there are equipment costs. You can borrow the equipment in the first two weeks of practice for free. You will need to bring your own shoes and regular sports clothes.
For men equipment includes a helmet, gloves, elbow protection, shoulder protection and a toque. This costs about 250 euro’s. It is also possible to rent a starters kit. The costs of a lease package for a full year costs 75 euro’s. A toque is not included, yet highly advisable to acquire!
Women's equipment includes a stick and mouth guard. Costs for a decent stick are around 40 euro's. It is also possible to lend a stick from the Domstad Devils in the first period.
